msc cornish sardines

POSTED 09 August 2013 IN Community

It’s that special time of year again when MSC Cornish Sardines are at their best and they are a must try during August!

They’re in season, sustainably caught, rich in essential oils and minerals and, most importantly, absolutely delicious. What’s not to love? Our emphasis on eating seasonally is in keeping with our efforts to bring you healthy food without harming our planet. That’s why we’re delighted to offer you ‘unagi-style’ donburi – two fillets of choice sardine in a ginger teriyaki sauce served on a bed of rice.

What’s sustainable about them?

The slightly sweet sticky sauce would typically be used with eel (unagi) but, as it’s an endangered species, we don’t serve eel at Feng Sushi. The robust flavour of sardines makes them a perfect alternative.

All our sardines are brought to us by the Cornish Sardine Company in Newlyn, delivering them from their boat within 24 hours of catching them. We chose Cornish Sardine because we like their environmentally friendly methods:

  • the sardines are caught wild off the Cornish coast, so are a British produce
  • by fishing off the Cornish coast they avoid wasteful by-catch, by fishing only from healthy stocks

For this reason they have been accredited by the Marine Stewardship Council – a global organisation that recognises and rewards sustainable fishing by working with fisheries, seafood companies and conservation groups to promote the best environmental choice in seafood. When you see the MSC ecolabel, you can be sure that you’re making the right choice.

A very healthy dish!

Another good reason for loving the sardine is all that goodness… they’re high in essential omega-3s, and are full of calcium as well as important trace elements such as iron and zinc, along with a fistful of B vitamins.

And did we mention the flavour?

The sardine is one of the most versatile fishes in the sea. Its firm flesh makes it perfect for barbecuing or grilling, and its great taste means that it’s almost as good on its own as it is paired with the wonderful Japanese flavours in our recipes. You’ll know just what we mean once you’ve tried one of our excellent sardine dishes…
