			<description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sustainability is our watchword, so it’s good to know that the EU are trying to do their bit too:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two-thirds of the world’s fish stocks are overfished so it was shocking to hear how much fish was being thrown back into the sea, dead, all because it wasn’t included in various quotas. This fish is known as ‘by-catch’ – fish unintentionally caught up in nets that fisherman don’t have a quota for, which has meant that the fish can’t be landed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On 27 February 2013 it was announced that the EU would be looking at better managing fish discards. A ban that will apply to pelagic fish, such as herring and whiting, is coming into force in 2014, and for white fish from January 2016.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;While this is, of course, good news and fully supported by Feng Sushi’s Silla Bjerrum, she does have some questions on its feasibility:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;• How will the ban be monitored?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;• Is the EU fishing fleet ready to adjust to the ban?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;• Hoes the EU fishing fleet have the right fishing gear?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;And there are other issues. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;With some species of fish – such as pelagic herring and mackerel – it’s easy to avoid by-catch. These fish swim in shoals and so it is easy to target tge species and reduce by-catch. With white fish and prawns, however, it’s more difficult to totally eliminate by-catch. In Silla’s opinion, any by-catch e.g a maximum limit of 10% that should either be taken to market, or sold to the certified fish meal industry to be used for sustainable fish farming - another solution to replenishing declining fish stocks. &lt;/p&gt;
